The Somerset Family Practice Residency Program is distinguished by its commitment to graduate medical education, and its excellence in family medicine. As the only residency program based at Somerset Medical Center, our program has provided unparalleled opportunities for one-on-one learning experiences since the residency was established in 1975. Our 231 graduates have been prepared for a diverse range of family practice opportunities including:

The Teaching Program
The Somerset Family Practice Residency Program is designed to expand residents’ knowledge base, enabling them to become experts in the diagnosis and treatment of common inpatient and outpatient problems. A competency-based curriculum stresses wellness and disease prevention, providing training in patient education, nutrition, normal human behavior, and in the psychosocial aspects of patient care. Residents learn procedures routinely performed by family physicians, and become a part of the complex business side of medicine as they work to coordinate the care of their patients. Our residents strive to look beyond residency to consider the health issues that await them in the communities where they will live and work.
The Residents’ Role
Residents at Somerset learn to think critically, to investigate options for continuing medical education and to use numerous sources for medical information. Active participation in programs designed to stimulate critical thinking and scholarly activity is required of residents. Our residents are challenged and encouraged to contribute their ideas and suggestions through participation in hospital and residency committees, and through regular Chief Resident forums.
Professional Development
Somerset residents must be committed to exploring their personal strengths, deficiencies and beliefs and are encouraged to establish a balance between their personal and professional goals. An interactive teaching approach emphasizes the relationships residents form with faculty, attending physicians, other residents, allied health care professionals and their patients. |
